Tonight, at 6:00 PM, we will continue our series of sermons on “Paul’s Passionate Prayers.” Tonight, we will look at Ephesians 3:14-21 under the heading : “Paul’s Prayer for Spiritual Strength.” In his prayers for the churches, the Apostle Paul never asked God to change the circumstances of people’s lives but rather that God would give them “the spirit of wisdom and the knowledge of God.” Therefore, our prayers for others should focus on how God is using their circumstances to increase their knowledge of Him. The depth of our daily prayers is equal to our knowledge of God and our spiritual concern for those for whom we are praying.

The depth of our prayers is also equal to our intimacy with God.

The more we know and understand God’s will for all mankind, the better we are able to see the true needs of those on our prayer list. Regardless of their life’s circumstances, our ultimate desire is for them to be living in obedience to God’s will as men, women, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and children.

Ephesus was a major port city in the Roman province of Asia.

The Temple of Artemis was a grand temple in ancient Ephesus (modern-day Turkey) dedicated to the Greek goddess Artemis, listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was famed for its immense size and beauty, serving as a major pilgrimage site and a center for both religious and civic life, with its functions including acting as a marketplace and financial institution. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, with the most famous version being an enormous, marble structure with 127 towering, decorated Ionic columns.

The Apostle Paul established the Church at Ephesus on his second missionary journey. After a few months, he left the Church in the hands of Priscilla and Aquila, and about 14 years later, Paul returned to Ephesus for three years.

According to Paul’s first prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23, believers are to be more concerned about the spiritual needs of those for whom we are praying, than for their physical or material needs .

According to Paul’s second prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21, believers are to be more concerned about the spiritual growth of those for whom we are praying, than their happiness and contentment in life.

In verses 20-21, Paul breaks out in a great doxology of praise:

“ Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
