“The Validation of Our Salvation” # 5 1 Peter 1:24-2:3

Years ago, A.W. Tozer said, “When men no longer fear God, they transgress His laws without hesitation. The fear of consequences is no deterrent when the fear of God is gone.” What the world witnessed in Paris tells us that Satan is no longer lurking in the shadows but he is now operating out in the open for all to see. However, such a horrific display of human depravity and blasphemy also tells us that Tozer was right when he said, “ The Church has surrendered her lofty concept of God and substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshiping men.” Christians will not win this war against evil by fighting against those human beings who perpetrate it, for such activity of the flesh only proves that we do not trust in the Lord our God. However, our most effective response to such wickedness is to lift up the name of Jesus Christ against the enemy and live our lives as a display of His holiness. Sunday morning, we will continue our sermon series, “How Should We Then Live.” The title of this sermon is “The Validation of our Salvation.”

In the first-century, the anchor was a symbol for hope and steadfastness for Christians suffering persecution. Anchors are found in many inscriptions in the catacombs of Rome, and they were worn by many Christians as a sign that their hope was in Christ alone. The source for this symbol is found in Hebrews 6:19, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.”

In his first epistle to Christians who were persecuted for their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, the Apostle Peter challenged them to turn their eyes off of their persecution, and onto their salvation, for they were called to endure such suffering,

The Greek word for “laying aside” means to reject vigorously. Therefore, to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord, Christians must reject those attitudes and actions that hinder their goal of spiritual maturity.

The Greek word for babes is “brephos,” which was used to described a child as long as it nursed at their mother’s breast.

While parents and grandparents have other ideas of what a newborn baby needs, the only thing that will satisfy a baby’s cry is to be attached to its mother’s breast and receive the pure, uncontaminated, unadulterated milk that it needs.

The “pure milk” of God’s Word is missing in today’s sermons.

Peter listed two reasons one might have for not craving for the pure milk of God’s Word.

Those who are content where they are spiritually will never grow to spiritual maturity.
