The writer of Proverbs said: “ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Man’s greatest sin is his refusal to honor God as God, which is the sin of pride . It was the sin of pride that caused the angel Lucifer to be cast out of heaven. When we set ourselves up as our own God and become our own judge of right and wrong, good and bad, godly and evil, we become just like Lucifer. When we dethrone God and enthrone ourselves, arranging our lives around our wants, needs, goals, ideas, desires, and dreams, we become just like Lucifer. When we cease to measure our lives by the standards of God’s Word and see nothing wrong in anything we decide to do if it helps us achieve self-satisfaction and pride, we become just like Lucifer. The Book of Amos was one of the first prophetic books to be written, and one of the twelve minor prophetic books ordained to be included in the canon of the Old Testament.

“Whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and the comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.” Romans 15:4

“A nation, or a church, or a family can rise no higher, nor fall any lower than its spiritual leadership.”

When Amos came into the major cities of Israel, he found the people of God living like the people of the world.

Amos urged them to look at how God allowed their neighboring nations to be destroyed; a warning of what was to come upon them, unless they repented and turned back to Him.

Those who refuse to be tilled as fields and sowed to produce a harvest, shall forever be as barren as rocks; producing nothing.

Applications:

The greatest need in our nation, our churches, and in our homes is for godly men to rise up and be the spiritual leaders God has called them to be, and to set that pattern before our children.
