“The Lord Roars from Zion” Amos 1:1-2:16

The Old Testament Book of Amos has a severe warning for God’s people today. In Amos’ day, as in ours, the rule of law was despised; the nation’s leaders were not only contributing to the breakdown of law and order, they were causing it, and the standards of morality were so low the people openly practiced all kinds of sexual sins. The prophet, Amos stood in the street of Israel and proclaimed, “Repent, and return unto God, or prepare to receive the just judgment of God.” Amos might well have been standing in the streets of America, for we are on the precipice of God’s judgment, and in many ways, we are already there.

The eternal significance of the Word of God is very evident as we look at the words spoken by the Prophet Amos to the people of Israel 2700 years ago.

Just as God was raising up an ungodly nation to come against Israel to judge them for their sins, God is raising up an ungodly people from within America to show us how far we have drifted from His Word.

Amos began his message by pointing out the sins of the pagan nations around Israel, and how God was going to punish them. He then turned his focus toward Judah, his own people, and then finally, Israel and Jerusalem!

When God begins to judge a nation, He does not begin with the corrupt government, businesses, or organizations that profit from sin, He begins with the institution that represents Him.
