I n his book, “A Christian Manifesto,” (1981) Dr. Francis Schaeffer wrote, “Our culture, society, government, and law are in the condition they’re in, not because of a conspiracy, but because the church has forsaken its duty to be the salt of the culture.” The title of this sermon is Return to Me: The Fall of a Nation . Amos is writing about the fall of Israel, but the Holy Spirit is speaking to us about the fall of America, not because of crooked politicians, but because of the spiritual weakness of today’s church.

The Book of Amos may have been the first book of prophecy to have been written and the third book to be included in the minor prophets, the last 12-books of the Old Testament.
“God’s relationship with His people includes His righteous judgment on them when they sin, and His righteous restoration of them when they repent, but both according to His sovereign mercy and grace.”
The nation of His – God’s “chosen” people:
Amos was one of the first prophets God sent to warn His people to repent of their sins or to prepare for His judgment.
Amos said what was about to happen to Israel was the decision of “The Righteous Judge” –
When the people of God refused to honor God as God or to give Him the glory due His Name, He had no choice but to remove His glory from their worship.
Even though God’s sovereign actions would destroy Israel as a nation, God would preserve the “remnant” – the House of Jacob – the godly seed, through which:
