“The Deity of Jesus Christ” Philippians 2:5-11

While the majority of Americans believe Jesus was a real man who walked on the earth 2000 years ago and should be respected as a great religious leader, only 56% believe He was, in fact, God. While it may not surprise us to hear those statistics regarding the general population, what should drive us to our knees is that almost a third of those who claim to be evangelical Christians reject the deity of Jesus Christ. How can that be? Charles H. Spurgeon said, “Depend upon it, my hearer , you never will go to heaven unless you are prepared to worship Jesus Christ as God. ” The fact is, we can’t accept Christ as our Savior unless He is also our Lord. Submitting ourselves unto Christ as our Master is the only way we can be delivered from the mastery of Satan’s schemes. This week, we will continue our sermon series on the Church as the Pillar and Ground of Truth. The title of this sermon is “The Deity of Jesus Christ.”

During times of persecution, the early Christians used a fish as a secret sign of identification. The first letters of each word in the expression “Jesus, Christ, Son of God, Savior” in Greek spell the Greek word for fish (ichthus) .

For 2000 years, Christians have believed in one God, who exists as three co-equal and co-eternal Persons, Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that they are ONE in being, UNITED in essence, power, and purpose, yet DISTINCT in their personality and their function.

The New Testament asserts that while He was distinct from God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, Jesus of Nazareth was identical in both nature and power, primarily because He was able to perform works only God could do.

Jesus of Nazareth is the theme of all Scripture from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:1.

When petty jealousies arose among the members of the church at Philipp, the work of the church was hindered.

Jesus was not only God of very God, but He was also man of very man, with one exception: He was without sin.

Because of His willingness to lay aside His deity and suffer death for all humanity, God the Father did several things:

“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.”

The Jews called GOD JEHOVAH or YAHWEH, which is God’s Holy Name. They considered JEHOVAH to be so holy they would not say it aloud except at extraordinary times, and only then by a priest.
