Perhaps the one verse most of us have in our minds when we think about the Book of Joshua is Chapter 24:15. After reminding the Israelites of all that God had done for them, Joshua challenged them to “ Choose ye this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua then challenged the Israelites to renew their loyalty to the Mosaic Covenant, and as a nation, the people declared, “We will serve the Lord.” Without a doubt, God’s people need to be brought to such a time of renewal; to review God’s blessings and to reaffirm our covenant of faith with God, that by receiving His Son as our Savior and Lord, He will forgive us of our sins, and we will serve as His witnesses in this world. Even though many battles still lay ahead, Joshua called the Israelites to assemble at Shechem to remind them of all that God had done for them, and to lead them to renew their covenant with God, who had given them the victory.
