“Lessons Learned Through Deception” Joshua 9:1-27

Years ago, my dear friends, Ron & Patrica Owens wrote and published a great song entitled, “Touch Not the Glory”: Have you been called to serve where others tried and failed, and with God’s help and strength, your efforts have prevailed? Touch not the glory, for it belongs to God . Have you some special gift, some riches you can share, or are you called of God to intercessory prayer? Touch not the glory; for it belongs to God. Has God appointed you to some great noble cause, or put you where you hear the sound of man’s applause? Touch not the glory, for it belongs to God. One of the life lessons I hope we are learning from our study of the Book of Joshua is that all the praise and glory for what He does through His people belongs to Him and Him alone. When we puff out our chests as if we had accomplished some incredible feat, we’ve just opened up our souls to Satan’s deception and defeat. Even after experiencing victory after victory, even Joshua did not “check” with God before making a decision; he was deceived into making a treaty with those whom the Lord had told him to destroy because of the depth of their wickedness. In 2 Timothy 4:3-4, Paul prophesied a time when many who claimed to be true believers in Jesus Christ would turn away from the true gospel and embrace myths, fables, and legends. Paul said, “Evil men and impostors’ would play a significant role in this future age of deception, growing worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.”

In 1 Corinthians 10:11, the Apostle Paul said, regarding the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land, “ Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”

Satan attacks believers in two ways:

With each victory comes the vulnerability of spiritual pride; assuming we no longer need the disciplines of discipleship, which means we just fell for Satan’s subtle lie, and opened ourselves up to an even greater attack of spiritual deception.
