“From Gethsemane to Golgotha” Matthew 26:1-27:66

The events that occurred that night in the Garden of Gethsemane have reverberated down through the centuries. The passion Jesus displayed on that momentous night has been depicted in music, books, and films for centuries. From the 16th century, when Bach wrote two magnificent oratorios based on the gospel accounts of Matthew and John, to the present-day film, The Passion of the Christ , the story of this extraordinary night has been told again and again.  As you recall, the Lord Jesus asked the Father twice to remove the cup of wrath He was about to drink. However, each time Jesus submitted Himself to the Father’s will, even though He was “exceedingly sorrowful unto death.” (Luke 22:45) Beloved, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus died to Himself! Only a few hours later, on a hill called Golgotha, Jesus died for our sins! Let us not forget that the Lord asks all who will follow Him to die to ourselves, and take up our cross as well. There is abundant evidence to prove Jesus’ death and resurrection was according to the “determined purpose and foreknowledge of God,” and that includes the historical timing of all the events.

In this sermon, we will cover the events recorded in the 26 th and 27 th chapters of Matthew’s gospel.

o   1:00-200 am – Jesus taken to Caiaphas for questioning

o   5:00-6:00 am – Jesus stands before Sanhedrin – mock trial

o   7:00-8:00 am – Jesus stands before Herod for sentencing

o   8:00-9:00 am – Pilate and Herod found Jesus to be innocent

o   12:00-3:00 pm – Darkness covered the area for miles.

o   3:00 pm – Jesus cried out “It is finished – Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit,” an earthquake occurred, the temple veil was torn, graves were opened, and the Roman Centurion confessed Christ.

o   Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus prepared the body and buried it in a nearby tomb.
