“Finding Refuge in God’s Justice and Mercy” Joshua 20:1 – 21:45

Joshua 20-21 concludes the conquest of the land of Canaan, the division of the land between the 12 tribes, and the provision for the Levites and the cities of Refuge. Joshua 21:43-45 is a doxology of praise unto God for His faithfulness in delivering the land He promised Abraham into the hands of the Israelites – i.e., what God had promised Abraham centuries earlier had finally become reality. Beloved, the Christian faith is founded on the promises of God. With all that is going on in the world today, we often find it hard to believe that God will keep His promises. However, I pray that these two verses will assure us, when God speaks, it is done – God will do what He says He will do – not one promise will be left undone. The term “refuge” is seldom used in today’s vocabulary, but in the days of the Bible, a “refuge” described a place of safety from danger and distress. For thousands of years, that was limited to the cleft of rocks, dens, and caves.

The first 12 chapters of the Book of Joshua describe how, under God’s leadership, Joshua led the Israelites to take possession of the land of Canaan, as the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants as an “everlasting possession.”
