Because of a major electrical storm last Wednesday night, our introductory sermon, “Detecting and Destroying the Roots of our Sin,” could not be live-streamed.  Thanks to all those who have asked for it to be repeated; we plan to do so tonight at 6:00 PM. Every sin, every wrong choice, whether in attitude or action, is an issue of the heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Every sin is also based upon what we believe, and while we are all accountable unto God for our own sins, the patterns of our behavior, whether good or bad, were taught to us by the generations before us. Those patterns are called “root sins.” Root sins are the deeply learned beliefs and habits that underlie the sins we repeat . Every sin we commit is a repeated version of the original human sin, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden tree’s fruit. The secret to getting free from those “root sins” begins with a self-examination of what satanic promises we have believed. Then we must renounce the lies we have believed, repent to God for persistently believing them, and begin to exercise faith in God’s promises by obeying him — “[bearing] fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8). According to Romans 3:23, “ For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

The Bible describes seven root sins from which all surface sins arise.

According to Hebrews 12:1, at least one of those seven root sins is a besetting sin for us; i.e., we struggle with it daily. “Wherefore, seeing we are encompassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

When a Christian sins, Satan uses that failure to plant seeds of doubt about God’s unconditional love for us and our eternal security in Him.

The “lust of the flesh” is the desires of our heart that are totally contrary to God’s will for our lives. (Galatians 5:19-24)

The “lust of the eyes” means we desire what we see. The “lust of the eyes” describes someone who is captivated by an outward show of materialism; an inordinate desire to have anything contrary to God’s will is sinful.

The “pride of life” describes an arrogant spirit of self-sufficiency, along with a desire for recognition, applause, status, and advantage.

The three root temptations: the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, and the pride of life, originate from our fallen human nature. Every person is born with the same root sins and will face the same temptations personally, and give account of their sins individually.
